Mosman started out as a defence installation, when in 1801, a battery was constructed at George's Head.The late 1820s brought whaling to Mosman. By 1900 Mosman was prospering by the increasing population, attracted to the natural charm and vistas of the unique bushland and water surrounds. New residents created and maintained the social character of Mosman. It drew artists, writers, intellectuals, businessmen and professionals.
